Bonnie and Clyde (1967) A brilliantly made, groundbreaking film that chronicles the short lives of America's most infamous criminals
Director: Arthur Penn Writer: David Newman, Robert Benton Genre: Biography / Crime / Drama / Romance / Thriller MPAA: Rated R for violence Country: USA Language: English Running Time: 112 min Rating: 8.0/10 IMDB URL: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061418/
Cast: Warren Beatty as Clyde Barrow Faye Dunaway as Bonnie Parker Michael J. Pollard as C.W. Moss Gene Hackman as Buck Barrow Estelle Parsons as Blanche Denver Pyle as Frank Hamer Dub Taylor as Ivan Moss Evans Evans as Velma Davis Gene Wilder as Eugene Grizzard
Bonnie Parker is bored with life and wants a change. She gets her chance when she meets a charming young drifter by the name of Clyde Barrow. Clyde has dreams of a life of crime that will free him from the hardships of the Depression. The two fall in love and begin a crime spree that extends from Oklahoma to Texas. They rob small banks with skill and panache, soon becoming minor celebrities known across the country. People are proud to have been held up by Bonnie and Clyde; to their victims, the duo is doing what nobody else has the guts to do. To the law, the two are evil bank robbers who deserve to be gunned down where they stand
User Comment: "Bonnie and Clyde" is, what I would consider to be, the movie that let loose violence in cinema. Artur Penn's based on a true story classic of violence, sexuality, and crime, was excellent thirty-two years ago when it first came out, is excellent today, and will be excellent for decades to come. Plus, it is one of those rare movies that are at the same time a landmark for cinema history as well as a true classic for more than just its landmark aspect. This movie earned five nominations only for acting and won best supporting-actress for Estelle Parsons One morning, as she wakes up, Bonnie Parker (Faye Dunaway) notices that a man is trying to subtly break into her car. She quickly dresses up and runs down. The man looks up at her embarrassed and we are than revealed Clyde Barrow (Warren Beatty). The two of them go for a walk down the road but when Clyde tells Bonnie that he is a robber, she doesn't believe him. So, he decides to prove to her that he isn't lying and robs a small grocery shop right away. As soon as he exits the store, he shows Bonnie the money and they escape in a car that they steal. And so begins an adventure they will never forget Along their way, they pick up a young boy who works at a gas station who is called C.W. (Michael J. Pollard). They begin doing more and more robberies until Clyde is finally forced to kill someone. Later on in their trip, Clyde's brother (Gene Hackman) and his wife Blanche (Estelle Parsons) catch up with Clyde, C.W., and Bonnie and they continue committing crimes such as robberies and even sometimes murders but usually in cases of self-defense "Bonnie and Clyde" is beautifully acted and expertly directed. After "Bonnie and Clyde", Arthur Penn directed some other good movies such as "Little big man" but as good as they were all, none ever equalled "Bonnie and Clyde". If you haven't seen it yet, you should put it first on your "Next movies to watch" list | Click this bar to view the full image. |

Bottle Rocket (1996) They're not really criminals, but everybody's got to have a dream
Director: Wes Anderson Writer: Owen Wilson, Wes Anderson Genre: Comedy / Crime MPAA: Rated R for language Country: USA Language: English / Spanish Running Time: 91 min Rating: 7.2/10 IMDB URL: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115734/
Cast: Luke Wilson as Anthony Adams Owen Wilson as Dignan Ned Dowd as Dr. Nichols Shea Fowler as Grace Haley Miller as Bernice Robert Musgrave as Bob Mapplethorpe Andrew Wilson as Future Man Brian Tenenbaum as H. Clay Murchison Jenni Tooley as Stacy Sinclair Temple Nash as Temple Dipak Pallana as Bookstore Employee Darryl Cox as Bookstore Manager Stephen Dignan as Rob Lumi Cavazos as Inez Julie Mayfield as Wife in Motelroom
Upon his release from a mental hospital following a nervous breakdown, the directionless Anthony joins his friend Dignan, who seems far less sane than the former. Dignan has hatched a hare-brained scheme for an as-yet-unspecified crime spree that somehow involves his former boss, the (supposedly) legendary Mr. Henry. With the help of their pathetic neighbor and pal Bob, Anthony and Dignan pull a job and hit the road, where Anthony finds love with motel maid Inez. When our boys finally hook up with Mr. Henry, the ensuing escapade turns out to be far from what anyone expected
User Comment: This movie is a true gem The Brothers Wilson have created a timeless masterpiece of friendship, loyalty and vision. Nevermind that their vision might not be what you'd do. The redeeming values Dignan and Anthony and Bob display far outweigh their faults I taped this movie off of IFC years ago, and it's been watched to death... almost literally (it's getting kinda worn... I should find a *new* copy). Anyone I've ever shown this movie to loved it James Caan gives his best performance since 'Misery', only this time it's funny Watch for the scene where: Bob's driving, they just left Anthony's sister's school (when he returned his mom's earrings)... Bob is going on about his miserable life, and if you watch Anthony in the rear seat, suddenly he straightens up in his seat and says "...ahh that was a stop sign..." Very Very Very VEWWY good movie | Click this bar to view the full image. |

Caligola (1979) The most controversial film of the 20th century is now the most controversial film of the 21st century
Writer: Gore Vidal Genre: Adult / Drama / History Country: Italy / USA Language: Italian / English Running Time: 156 min Rating: 4.9/10 IMDB URL: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080491/
Cast: Malcolm McDowell as Caligula Teresa Ann Savoy as Drusilla Guido Mannari as Macro John Gielgud as Nerva Peter O'Toole as Tiberius Giancarlo Badessi as Claudius Bruno Brive as Gemellus Adriana Asti as Ennia Leopoldo Trieste as Charicles Paolo Bonacelli as Chaerea John Steiner as Longinus Mirella D'Angelo as Livia Helen Mirren as Caesonia Rick Parets as Mnester Paula Mitchell as Subura Singer
The rise and fall of the notorious Roman Emperor Caligula, showing the violent methods that he employs to gain the throne, and the subsequent insanity of his reign - he gives his horse political office and humiliates and executes anyone who even slightly displeases him. He also sleeps with his sister, organises elaborate orgies and embarks on a fruitless invasion of England before meeting an appropriate end. There are various versions of the film, ranging from the heavily- truncated 90-minute version to the legendary 160-minute hardcore version which leaves nothing to the imagination (though the hardcore scenes were inserted later and do not involve the main cast members)
User Comment: This is actually a pretty good film. Perhaps the intense nudity and graphic-ness was not likeable but the movie was very closely tied to the facts and history of Caligula himself. You don't see many movies that actually stick with the facts instead of making it 'Hollywood.' I reccommend this to people who "know" about Caligula in advance so that they know what their seeing instead of going into the film not having a clue what its about. I don't think they could've made the movie any better that relates to Caligula- he was a psychopath and it showed in this movie Tons of great scenes, and it showed what the "real" Rome was like. Brutal and harsh and misgiving
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) We are not alone
Director: Steven Spielberg Writer: Steven Spielberg Genre: Adventure / Drama / Sci-Fi Country: USA Language: English / French / Spanish / Hindi Running Time: 132 min (special edition) Rating: 7.8/10 IMDB URL: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075860/
Cast: Richard Dreyfuss as Roy Neary Fran ois Truffaut as Claude Lacombe Teri Garr as Ronnie Neary Melinda Dillon as Jillian Guiler Bob Balaban as David Laughlin J. Patrick McNamara as Project Leader Warren J. Kemmerling as Wild Bill Roberts Blossom as Farmer Philip Dodds as Jean Claude Cary Guffey as Barry Guiler Shawn Bishop as Brad Neary Adrienne Campbell as Sylvia Neary Justin Dreyfuss as Toby Neary Lance Henriksen as Robert Merrill Connally as Team Leader
Cableman Roy Neary is one of several people who experience a close encounter of the first kind, witnessing UFOs flying through the night sky. He is subsequently haunted by a mountainlike image in his head and becomes obsessed with discovering what it represents, putting severe strain on his marriage. Meanwhile, government agents around the world have a close encounter of the second kind, discovering physical evidence of otherworldly visitors in the form of military vehicles that went missing decades ago suddenly appearing in the middle of nowhere. Roy and the agents both follow the clues they have been given to reach a site where they will have a close encounter of the third kind: contact
User Comment: A perfectly fascinating piece of science fiction fantasy, it is visually impressive, well written and well directed. The film has certain moments that can be described only as classic, however the overall film is quite imperfect. There are some really striking flaws such as poor dialogue recording, an ending that is by far too roundabout, and in fact a whole end section that is not nearly as interesting as the beginning of the film. Either way, there is still however a lot to appreciate in the experience, including the spectacular sound effects, which won the film a special achievement Oscar | Click this bar to view the full image. |

Kalifornia (1993) fear never travels alone
Director: Dominic Sena Writer: Stephen Levy, Tim Metcalfe Genre: Crime / Drama / Thriller MPAA: Rated R for strong violence, and for sexuality and language Country: USA Language: English Running Time: 117 min Rating: 6.6/10 IMDB URL: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107302/
Cast: Brad Pitt as Early Grayce Kathy Larson as Teenage Girl David Milford as Driver David Duchovny as Brian Kessler John Zarchen as Peter David Rose as Eric Michelle Forbes as Carrie Laughlin Tommy Chappelle as Old Man Juliette Lewis as Adele Corners Judson Vaughn as Parole Officer James Michael McDougal as John Diebold Patricia Sill as Carol Brett Rice as Police Officer Marisa Raper as Little Girl Bill Crabb as Middle Aged Farmer
Brian Kessler, a journalist researching serial killers, and his photographer girlfriend Carrie set out on a cross-country tour of the sites of the killings. Sharing the ride and their expenses are Early Grayce, a paroled white trash criminal, and his girlfriend Adele. As the trip progresses, Early begins to appear more and more unstable, and Brian and Carrie begin to fear that they may have a real-life killer in the back seat of their car
User Comment: Kalifornia came out in 1993, just as 3 of the 4 lead characters were up and coming to the levels of fame they now possess in 2006. This is a nice psycho-thriller that should appeal to all David Duchovny fans because of his dry and intelligent narratives that find their ways into his work, like with most of his episodes of the X-Files, Playing God, and Red Shoe Diaries People who were put off by the heavy southern accent from Brad Pitt and Juliette Lewis' characters obviously have never spent much time in the south. For every "Brian and Carrie" in the south, there is an "Adele and Early" and in 2006, that's the real horror of this flick Aside from that, I think the film was written with a cult film intention - like with Carrie's photography, it's not suitable for mass consumption. But if you have a copy of this in your personal library, I think it says something positive about your tastes for freaky movies | Click this bar to view the full image. |

Nuovo Cinema Paradiso (1988) A celebration of youth, friendship, and the everlasting magic of the movies
Director: Giuseppe Tornatore Writer: Giuseppe Tornatore, Giuseppe Tornatore Genre: Comedy / Drama / Romance MPAA: Rated R for some sexuality. (director's cut) Country: Italy / France Language: Italian / English / Portuguese Running Time: 155 min Rating: 8.4/10 IMDB URL: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095765/
Cast: Antonella Attili as Maria Di Vita - Younger Enzo Cannavale as Spaccafico Isa Danieli as Anna Leo Gullotta as Usher Marco Leonardi as Salvatore 'Tot ' Di Vita - Teenager Pupella Maggio as Maria Di Vita - Older Agnese Nano as Elena Mendola Leopoldo Trieste as Father Adelfio Salvatore Cascio as Salvatore 'Tot ' Di Vita - Child Tano Cimarosa as Blacksmith Nicola Di Pinto as Village Idiot Roberta Lena as Lia Nino Terzo as Peppino's Father Jacques Perrin as Salvatore 'Tot ' Di Vita - Adult Philippe Noiret as Alfredo
A boy who grew up in a native Sicilian Village returns home as a famous director after receiving news about the death of an old friend. Told in a flashback, Salvatore reminiscences about his childhood and his relationship with Alfredo, a projectionist at Cinema Paradiso. Under the fatherly influence of Alfredo, Salvatore fell in love with film making, with the duo spending many hours discussing about films and Alfredo painstakingly teaching Salvatore the skills that became a stepping stone for the young boy into the world of film making. The film brings the audience through the changes in cinema and the dying trade of traditional film making, editing and screening. It also explores a young boy's dream of leaving his little town to foray into the world outside
User Comment: After seeing this special edition DVD which shows the entire 174-minute film (in addition to the 121-minute one that most of us had seen over the years,) my rating of this film was elevated. This review is of the longer "director's cut." Most of the new footage involved the main's character's romance while he was a young man. The story then is continued years later when that character comes back to his hometown for a funeral and runs into the woman he was in love with but never was able to get for his own. It turns out to be a somewhat tragic love story The first part of the film, with Salvatore Cascio as "Toto" a young boy is a love story about two people sharing their love of movies: the kid and an adult "Alfredo" (Phillpe Noiret) who runs the local movie theater. Their love of film bonds them for life The word "love" is used repeatedly in this review because that's the dominant theme: the love people had for others and for the world of film, something all of us on this website share The second and third parts of the film are the above-mentioned love story of Toto (Marco Leonardi as an adolescent and then Jacques Perrin as an adult) and "Elena" (Agnese Nano/ Brigitte Fossey). The first third of this director;s cut edition is much livelier and interesting, frankly, than the last two-thirds. Although not boring, it does drag in a few spots but the longer version is better in the long run because it makes the whole story much more meaningful It's very nicely filmed and you get a real feel for the Italian people and their little town. The director of the movie, Giuseppe Tornatore, went on to make other great visual films, two of which I also like: Malena and The Star Maker.....but Cinema Paradiso, I believe, is considered his "masterpiece." | Click this bar to view the full image. |

Payback (1999) Get ready to root for the bad guy
Director: Brian Helgeland Writer: Donald E. Westlake, Brian Helgeland Genre: Action / Crime / Thriller MPAA: Rated R for strong violence, language, and drug and sexual content Country: USA Language: English Running Time: 100 min Rating: 7.0/10 IMDB URL: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120784/
Cast: Mel Gibson as Porter Gregg Henry as Val Resnick Maria Bello as Rosie David Paymer as Arthur Stegman Bill Duke as Det. Hicks Deborah Kara Unger as Mrs. Lynn Porter John Glover as Phil William Devane as Carter Lucy Liu as Pearl Jack Conley as Det. Leary Kris Kristofferson as Bronson Mark Alfa as Johnny's Friend #2 Kwame Amoaku as Radioman Justin Ashforth as Michael, Bartender #1 Len Bajenski as Fairfax Bodyguard #1
Porter is a small time but tough criminal, who's primary gig, is robbery. Now his friend Val Resnick needs $130,000 to pay back a criminal group known as "The Outfit". He tells Porter about some Asian couriers who carry $300,000, Porter agrees to it on the condition that they split the take. When they hit them, they discover that they only have $140,000, and Resnick says that, that's what they always carry. He pulls out a gun and shoots Porter in the back and leaves him to die. However, Porter manages to make it to a doctor, and get treated, when he recovers, he sets out to get Resnick and his share $70,000. He begins by approaching an associate of Resnick's. Porter then seeks out a prostitute named Rosie, whom he knew, she tells him where he can find Resnick, when he does he tells Resnick that he should go to his employers and ask them to give him back $70,000 of the money he gave them, Resnick says that's impossible but Porter "convinces" him to do it. Resnick then goes to his boss, Mr. Carter, who tells him that it's in their best interest to help Resnick deal with Porter. Carter orders one of his men to take Porter out but Porter's just too good for them. Resnick then asks his girlfriend who knows the people whom he and Porter stole the money from, and tells her to tell them where they can find him. When they do they are interrupted by two policemen, but they are crooked who are under the impression that Porter's going after $200,000-300,000 and are going to get it. Can Porter deal with all these people and still get his money
User Comment: A modern-day film noir, this is about as tough as it gets. Rough characters, rough violence and rough language all comprise this re-make of the 1967 film "Point Blank," which starred Lee Marvin Mel Gibson is the "good guy" here, taking Marvin's role, but I put that in quotes because he's not really "good," just a thief attempting to get his $70,000 back which was stolen from him by his partner and ex-wife in a former heist. He goes up the ladder, little guy to the top boss, to finally get his money Gibson gets beaten up several times and even gets tortured in one toes- crunching scene. The women are tough-looking, coarse and unappealing. I did like the metallic-blue hues in here, making this an interesting visual film. However, the city scenes are bleak, a la Batman Despite the above, I still found the movie good enough to watch several times. Most people like a simple, revenge story which this really is, and there is dark humor in here, too. The other characters are interesting, particularly the one played by William Devane. I also liked the narration by Gibson, done in 1940s film noir style. The worst person in here was the sadistic "Val Resnick" (Gregg Henry). He was so bad, he was cartoon-ish, someone so bad he belonged in one of those Batman or Hellboy or Spiderman flicks | Click this bar to view the full image. |

Quo Vadis (1951) Three Years in the Making! Thousands in the Cast! Filmed in Rome!
Director: Mervyn LeRoy Writer: John Lee Mahin, S.N. Behrman Genre: Drama / History / Romance Country: USA Language: English Running Time: 171 min Rating: 7.1/10 IMDB URL: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0043949/
Cast: Robert Taylor as Marcus Vinicius Deborah Kerr as Lygia Leo Genn as Petronius Peter Ustinov as Nero Patricia Laffan as Poppaea Finlay Currie as Peter Abraham Sofaer as Paul Marina Berti as Eunice Buddy Baer as Ursus Felix Aylmer as Plautius Nora Swinburne as Pomponia Ralph Truman as Tigellinus Norman Wooland as Nerva Peter Miles as Nazarius Geoffrey Dunn as Terpnos
Returning to Rome after 3 years in the field, General Marcus Vinicius meets Lygia and falls in love with her. She is a Christian and doesn't want to have anything to do with a warrior. Though she grew up Roman, the adopted daughter of a retired general, Lygia is technically a hostage of Rome. Marcus gets Emperor Nero to give her to him for services rendered. Lygia resents this, but somehow falls in love with Marcus anyway. Meanwhile Nero's atrocities get more outrageous. When he burns Rome and blames the Christians, Marcus goes off to save Lygia and her family. Nero captures them and all the Christians, and throws them to the lions
User Comment: A fellow IMDb-er from Poland, defending Henryk Sienkiewicz's monumental, Nobel Prize-winning novel (which I HAVE read, by the way) calls this M-G-M Technicolor spectacle "CRAP"! Please! The novel is incredibly dense and detailed; possibly a lot truer to what was known in the early part of the twentieth century of the actual events of the time of its plot; with lots of references to the cruelty and luxury of Nero's Rome; frequent mentions of the pervasive nudity under all kinds of circumstances among the Romans of the time; and, given its length, a perhaps more respectful view of the emergence of Christianity at a time when its converts risked their very lives to admit their beliefs. There is no way that even a multi-part TV mini-(I mean, maxi-)series could come close to approximating the novel's overwhelming complexity But, as a piece of filmed entertainment, this cinema extravaganza is not at all worthy of being consigned to the proverbial garbage heap. The cast, yes, including Robert Taylor and Deborah Kerr, but, especially the supporting actors (Peter Ustinov, of course; plus Leo Genn, in particular, as well as Patricia Laffan, Marina Berti, Finlay Currie, Felix Aylmer, Rosalie Crutchley, et al.) all take full advantage of a script that had many witty as well as dramatic moments and, for its day, a fairly reverent (though not historically accurate) rendering of Christianity's emergence in a hostile Roman world In addition its production values have never been surpassed; in fact, they've never been equalled. One understands how beleaguered those of Polish descent often must feel (I, for one, have never been a fan of so-called "Polish jokes."), but let's not set impossible standards for a translation of one of Poland's most memorable literary achievements! This production is an example of Hollywood marshalling some impressive resources, while avoiding more than a modicum of the cliches that can sabotage such a project. It may not honor its source as some might wish, but it's still a quite grand and opulently eye-filling way to enjoy close to three hours | Click this bar to view the full image. |

Reservoir Dogs (1992) Four perfect killers. One perfect crime. Now all they have to fear is each other
Director: Quentin Tarantino Writer: Quentin Tarantino, Roger Avary Genre: Crime / Mystery / Thriller MPAA: Rated R for strong violence and language Country: USA Language: English Running Time: 99 min Rating: 8.4/10 IMDB URL: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105236/
Cast: Harvey Keitel as Mr. White - Larry Dimmick Tim Roth as Mr. Orange - Freddy Newandyke Michael Madsen as Mr. Blonde - Vic Vega Chris Penn as Nice Guy Eddie Cabot Steve Buscemi as Mr. Pink Lawrence Tierney as Joe Cabot Edward Bunker as Mr. Blue Quentin Tarantino as Mr. Brown Randy Brooks as Holdaway Kirk Baltz as Ofcr. Marvin Nash Steven Wright as K-Billy DJ Rich Turner as Sheriff #1 David Steen as Sheriff #2 Tony Cosmo as Sheriff #3 Stevo Polyi as Sheriff #4
Six criminals, who are strangers to each other, are hired by a crime boss Joe Cabot to carry out a diamond robbery. Right at the outset, they are given false names with an intention that they won't get too close and concentrate on the job instead. They are completely sure that the robbery is going to be a success. But when the police show up right at the time and the site of the robbery, panic spreads amongst the group members and one of them is killed in the subsequent shootout along with a few policemen and civilians. When the remaining people assemble at the premeditated rendezvous point (a warehouse), they begin to suspect that one of them is an undercover cop
User Comment: Crime boss Joe Cabot brings together a group of criminals to perform a big one-off job. To protect each other, they all use colour coded names. However on the day of the job, the police ambush the gang and each makes their own getaway. As the gang comes together at their warehouse meeting point they realise that someone within the gang must have tipped the police or be an undercover. The accusations and suspicions escalate into violence in the confines of the warehouse When this film came out in the UK it caused an absolute firestorm of controversy over it's violence, even to the point that it was banned in the UK for a while. I still find this absurd and am very glad we have moved to a more tolerant society where generally the BBFC protect vulnerable groups but let adults decide for themselves. Looking at the media's adoring welcome for the ultra violent Kill Bill one can't help but marvel at how things have changed. Looking at Reservoir Dogs now (or even then!) it simply isn't THAT violent. However what it is is very sudden and all the more powerful for it Tarantino directs the film and writes the film in such a way that it was impossible to ignore him even if the film was only a cult hit. The dialogue is both witty at points but, more importantly, very tough and loaded with testosterone. It is the writing that makes us like these coffee shop jokers at the start before shocking us by suddenly throwing us into a backseat bloodbath. The entire job happens off camera, and only occasionally do we actually see the immediate effect of violence - usually we get the aftermath. It is incredibly tight and very tense throughout, I was about 16 when my father took me to see this film - it has stayed with me since and I still considered it to be one of the best `job gone wrong' films of my generation. It may not be original (there's a thin line between a homage and a rip off) but it is certainly effectively done The cast are excellent and turn the hardboiled dialogue into convincing scenes. Keitel is wonderful. His character is a father figure of sorts and he is wildly out of control at times and balanced at others. Likewise Buscemi is wide-eyed and freaking out for much of the film, but he does it well. Roth is more balanced but is still good for it; it is his job to carry the emotional weight of the film and he does it well, despite a wandering American accent at times. Madsen is great, maybe not the best character but wildly out of control. Tierney was a great piece of casting, as was Bunker. Penn is good but not the best of the cast Tarantino mercifully has little acting to do, but it is his film as writer and director. The flashbacks during the film was a brave way to do it but it really works well - mixing stories with flashbacks and so on. No matter what the time of the scene, it all keeps moving tensely towards the climax. It may be a homage and not as original as some films but so what - it is tight and tense, macho, violent, funny and very enjoyable | Click this bar to view the full image. |

Stand by Me (1986) For some, it's the last real taste of innocence, and the first real taste of life. But for everyone, it's the time that memories are made of
Director: Rob Reiner Writer: Rob Reiner Genre: Adventure / Drama Country: USA Language: English Running Time: 89 min Rating: 8.2/10 IMDB URL: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092005/
Cast: Wil Wheaton as Gordie Lachance River Phoenix as Chris Chambers Corey Feldman as Teddy Duchamp Jerry O'Connell as Vern Tessio Kiefer Sutherland as Ace Merrill Casey Siemaszko as Billy Tessio Gary Riley as Charlie Hogan Bradley Gregg as Eyeball Chambers Jason Oliver as Vince Desjardins Marshall Bell as Mr. Lachance Frances Lee McCain as Mrs. Lachance Bruce Kirby as Mr. Quidacioluo William Bronder as Milo Pressman Scott Beach as Mayor Grundy Richard Dreyfuss as The Writer
Based on Stephen King's Short story "The Body", "Stand By Me" tells the tale of Gordie Lachance, a writer who looks back on his preteen days when he and three close friends went on their own adventure to find the body of a kid their age who had gone missing and presumed dead. The stakes are upped when the bad kids in town are closely tailing - and it becomes a race to see who'll be able to recover the body first
User Comment: Stephen King adaptations can be great. In my opinion the less horror pictures, and The Shining, are the best. Misery, The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and this one. Stand by Me is a great film, you can say it is a drama with some thriller elements Four boys hear the location of the dead body of a boy from their small town. The boys go on a trip to look for the body, about 30 miles away. There are some little problems on the way, including another gang with its leader Kiefer Sutherland. One of the boys thinks about his late brother because of the recent events, played by John Cusack. It seems to be a simple story but it is told perfect The performances the boys give, one of them is the late River Phoenix, are all extraordinary. I liked the way their friendship was shown. Just a great movie, see this. 9/10 | Click this bar to view the full image. |

The English Patient (1996) In love, there are no boundaries
Director: Anthony Minghella Writer: Michael Ondaatje, Anthony Minghella Genre: Romance / Drama / War MPAA: Rated R for sexuality, some violence and language Country: USA / UK Language: English / German / Italian / Arabic Running Time: 162 min Rating: 7.3/10 IMDB URL: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116209/
Cast: Ralph Fiennes as Count Laszlo de Alm sy Juliette Binoche as Hana Willem Dafoe as David Caravaggio Kristin Scott Thomas as Katharine Clifton Naveen Andrews as Kip Colin Firth as Geoffrey Clifton Julian Wadham as Madox J rgen Prochnow as Major Muller Kevin Whately as Sgt. Hardy Clive Merrison as Fenelon-Barnes Nino Castelnuovo as D'Agostino Hichem Rostom as Fouad Peter R hring as Bermann Geordie Johnson as Oliver Torri Higginson as Mary
A burn victim, a nurse, a thief, and a sapper find themselves in each others company in an old Italian villa close to the end of World War II. Through flashbacks, we see the life of the burn victim, whose passionate love of a woman and choices he made for her ultimately change the lives of one other person in the villa. Not only is this film a search for the identity of the English patient, but a search for the identities of all the people in the quiet old villa
User Comment: 'The English Patient' can rightly be compared to the films of David Lean, whose sweeping epics such as 'Lawrence of Arabia' and 'Bridge on the River Kwai' must have inspired the director Anthony Minghella. The film is beautifully photographed, and like 'Lawrence', is set in Northern Africa, but during the second world war. The story is complex, but it boils down to a forbidden love between an opinionated and often difficult archeologist played by Ralph Fiennes and a married woman played by Kristin Scott Thomas The story, based on a novel by Michael Ondaatje, is told in flashbacks by Fiennes' Count Laszlo de Almasy - the titular character. The fact that his name does not sound like he's English plays a key role in what unfolds. He has been badly burned in a plane crash, occurring just as the film opens, and is being cared for back in Europe by Hana, an army nurse played by Juliette Binoche. What makes this story epic is the vast sweep across place and time, and the development of characters beyond that of the two ill-fated lovers. The film makes clear that true love and passion, even with dreaded consequences, can make life worth living, or worth dying for. If you're a romantic at heart, and can appreciate a film without the standard happy endings and simple moral codes, you may find that 'The English Patient' speaks directly to you
